L4 presentation

  1. Jack - thank you. Tony? Sam?
  2. Johnny - what time? Who else will present and when?
  3. You tell me when your portfolio is done, and I will then check.
  4. Work in pairs to create a 1 to 2 minute monologue. Help each other record and then upload. Then, in either the same pairs or different pairs, record a discussion on the same topic. Don't argue or debate. Simply exchange opinions.


  1. "Killing". Structure rather than pronunciation.
  2. You need to be clear.
  3. You have explored to discover something new to inform the audience. An opinion of your own backed up with facts and other evidence. Something to think about. Something that could help them grow intellectually.
  4. Don't use words or a grammatical structures unless you know them!
  5. Has your essay 'achieved'?
  6. How did you create it? Your method is probably wrong. 
  7. Spelling check. Grammar check.
  8. The unit of a text is not the word, it's a sentence. Even though each word may be correct, the sentence may not be.
  9. Each main sentence is a complete thought. It can be the topic sentence. Then you write other sentences to make that idea clearer. That is the paragraph.
  10. What is your 10-word outline?
  11. China, problem, old (old what? is? has? a? the?)
  12. There is NO global population problem!
  13. What are the 6 references?
  14. Population pyramid.
  15. Reference 1.
  16. Air pollution and child health.

Kosens Week 1

2nd 1-minute speech. How can we make this less stressful?

First practice en masse and see who is the last person standing. Use key words. Prepare by reminding individuals of what each needs to improve.

En masse 'complaint' session about book.  Then I have 'help'. Then help takes over. Elicit useful softening phrases. 

Then, what book would be better.

Then, what would be better than a book.

Try next section of How I Met Myself. (If no take up, then what story would be better?

Hand out next diary page. Do the illustration in class and tell each other about it in various 'roles'.

Afternoon preparation. Divvy up key words to explain. Oral gap fill.

100-word introduction

My name is William Lucas. I have been in Dunedin since the age of two. I'm a Kiwi, but my parents are Dutch. I'm married, and I have a family. My wife and I have one daughter, and I have three children from a previous marriage. I even have two grandchildren, both boys.

I enjoy living in Dunedin, although I miss living in Japan. I spent six years there, and am learning Japanese. I like many things about living in New Zealand, but not everything. I hope to be able to spend time in more than one country in future.

English names

Try saying this list of names (from Transcribing the Sound of English by Paul Tench) that require the full range of vowels: Steve, Jim, Jen, Pat, Mark, John, George, Brook, Sue, Chuck, Bert, Jane, Joe, Di, Joy, Ian, Claire, Noor, Howard, Fiona and Louise. If we wanted to use different vowels for them all, we'd need 22 (Howard has 2)!
